Donald Nesbitt is the Hooks High School Spanish teacher. He has been teaching for about ten years, serving grades 9–12 at several different Spanish levels, and he is also an assistant soccer coach.
His favorite part of teaching is that he feels supported by administration and colleagues, and, in his words, “the students are good for the most part.” He originally considered majoring in computer science but found that the pay was low because many people worked for subpar wages. He decided to pursue teaching after working part time as a substitute while also working in the medical field.
He recalls his sixth‑grade English teacher reaching out to him and giving him the courage to speak up when he needed help because he was a quiet, shy kid. He wants his students to understand that he is willing to help them become independent learners who set reasonable goals while still feeling comfortable asking questions and learning effectively.
He enjoys talking about when he played sports in high school and college and, having coached soccer, he likes teaching his students how to say different sports in Spanish. He is also an avid traveler: he has visited 38 states and seven countries. He thinks people would be surprised by this, which is true — it makes for interesting stories he likes to tell. He enjoys spending time with his wife and friends and also likes attending college football games or Texas Rangers games when he has the opportunity.
His favorite quote is by George Washington Carver about caring for others: “How far you go in life depends on being tender with the young, compassionate with the aged, sympathetic with the striving and tolerant of the weak and strong. Because someday in your life you will have been all of these.”
If he were not a teacher, he thinks he would be a physical therapist. He appreciates what Hooks High does for the community, such as bringing people together with the watermelon festival to enjoy the wonderful fruit God gave us.
