Nimona is a very, VERY good movie—personally, one of the best movies I’ve seen in a long time. The film doesn’t take itself very seriously unless it needs to, and the humor, along with the story, all improve because of it. Not to mention just how fun the main cast is! Nimona is a riot to watch despite the story she was given, and Ballister is a very grounded and hilarious main character who, despite his circumstances, still manages to stay upbeat and keep the movie entertaining alongside Nimona.
The setting is interesting. It’s a mix between medieval knights and futuristic technology like flying cars. It’s a good kind of interesting, however, as there’s so much to explore and imagine. For example, how do they get paid? A street musician was given a tip by someone simply swiping up with their phone facing the musician, so maybe everything like currency is digital now? Their savior, Gloreth, had undergone theosis and is no longer seen as a powerful warrior; now, he is viewed somewhat as a god in their eyes. There are just so many little background details that make the story come to life, and it’s just so vibrant and colorful. The designs of everything are the last detail that makes the movie ‘pop.’ The knights’ armor, the crossbows—everything looks so futuristic while keeping the medieval vibe.
Every single character is so FUN. Each character has such a vibrant and fleshed-out personality, no matter how hateable they may be or how little screen time they have. They all have something in common: the humor. This movie is one of the few that made me laugh out loud like no other film has before. Ballister Boldheart and Ambrosius Goldenloin are such silly names, and yet it feels normal for people to be named that in honor of knights and such. It’s so full of life, vibrant, and clean. Nimona is also entertaining, despite her story not exactly being the happiest; she is betrayed by Gloreth and faces other challenges. She’s definitely the star of the movie with how funny she is and how tragic her story was. It’s also implied that she wasn’t lying about her origins in the subway scene. She had tossed a coin in the well, but her wish was kept ambiguous to maintain a sliver of mystery about her.
Overall, this movie is honestly one I could rewatch constantly; I have nothing negative to say about it. 10/10.
