Over the past three years alone, our UIL Academics have been highly successful. We have sent several people to the state meet each year, with some individuals even competing multiple times and some individuals even placing among the top of the state. Our most notable individual achievements include: James DeAnda winning a state championship in Congressional Debate and placing third in Social Studies his senior year; Guen Cannon placing fifth at state in Social Studies her junior year and placing second her senior year; Jonathan Tinajero Juarez competing in Current Events at state every year in high school so far; and Emma Hughes placing fifth at state in Headline Writing her sophomore year.
Several UIL teams have also been highly successful. Hooks as a whole was the overall best school in our district in 2023, earning the highly competitive UIL Academics Sweepstakes award. The 2022 Social Studies team, consisting of James DeAnda, Guen Cannon, Rylan Baird, and DK Shackleford, was the third-place team out of five. Most notably, the 2023 District Champion Cross-Examination Debate team of Damian Vazquez and Jonathan Tinajero Juarez reached the elimination rounds of the state competition, earning a finish as a State Cross-Examination Debate Quarterfinalist team among the top 16 in the state.
