The Mighty Hornet band brought home a sweepstakes trophy on March 8th, after they earned perfect scores at the recent UIL contest. The last time the band won a sweepstakes was two years ago, making this recent win an exciting experience for the students.

“After the performance, I was not expecting straight 1’s, but it felt absolutely amazing to get it and bring back a sweepstakes award,” junior Rachel Tyree said.

The band played three songs for the on-stage portion of the contest. This year, their selections were “Zig-Zag”, “In a French Garden”, and “Hillside March.”

“My favorite piece we played was ‘In a French Garden,'” freshman Lillie Piazza said. “It reminds me of Tinkerbell.”

A sight reading competition was held along with the band’s performance on stage. A performer receives a piece of music they have never seen before, rehearses for seven minutes, and then performs it to a judge. The HHS band also scored straight 1’s in that competition.

“We [did excellent] in sight reading,” Tyree said “It was one of our best runs and I was so happy that everyone paid attention and performed well.”
