The Mighty Hornet Band will attend the Area marching contest on Saturday, in Nacogdoches, Tx at Stephen F. Austin University. The band will take the field at 2:45 P.M. They will have a chance to make finals again at Area, but no matter what, the marching season will come to an end Saturday.

“As a senior, it only feels right to finally have made it to one of the bigger challenges in marching,” trumpet player and section leader Tyler Crosby said. “I am so glad that it happened my senior year, so I can experience it  with all my friends [that] I have made through the years.”

The band’s first marching competition of the season was on September 24th, at the Pleasant Grove Marching Invitational at PG high school. The band performed in the heat of the day at 11:45 and came away with a 2. However, the color guard got a 1 and the percussion got a 2.

The next weekend, at the Four States Marching Contest hosted by Texas High, the band improved tremendously. In the preliminary contest, the band came away with a 1, the guard received a 1 as well, and percussion received a 3. These scores put the band in 4th place out of 20, advancing them to finals. After performing in finals, the Hornet band finished in 5th place.

Out of all the guards, Hooks placed 3rd and out of the percussion sections Hooks was 7th. These scores have not been seen in the Hornet Band since the 2011 Glee show! The members of the band were absolutely ecstatic about these results.

“When they first announced we made finals, my immediate reaction was ‘I want to go home’ but after everything it was fun and I loved playing again,“ sophomore trombone player Tre Beaty said. “Making finals was very fun but it did leave me exhausted.”

Then, last Saturday, the band attended the Battle for the Spear Marching Contest in Winnsboro. In prelims, the band received a 2 overall, and in finals they placed 8th with the band receiving a 2, color guard receiving a 1, and percussion receiving a 1.

“I am very proud of the whole band, and I am excited that this is only my freshman year and we made finals,“ freshman flute player Lillie Piazza said.

Even though their season is ending, the Hornet Band will still attend every football game and pep rally to support football and cheer, but will not have their own competitions again until UIL concert season in March.
